It's delightful, if at times heartbreaking, to watch a society of chimpanzees collaborate and interact in ways that are incredibly similar to human beings. It follows the life of an orphaned young Chimp. Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954) When several women are found mutilated and murdered, the Paris police are baffled as to who the killer may be. Ultimately, not much "happens" in Chimpanzee, but it's still an amazing look at the rare bond between an alpha male and his youngest kin. This Disneynature Chimpanzee DVD is an amazing watch, and every family should have a copy in their library. In the Shadow of Kilimanjaro (1985) Because of a severe drought in Kenya in 1984, ninety thousand starving baboons go on a murderous rampage, killing humans and animals alike. The jungle photography is stunning and backs up a message of motherhood, bonding, friendship, and companionship in the unlikeliest places. When Jack, a sign-language-speaking chimp, makes a break for freedom, his talent for ice skating soon turns him into the local hockey team's secret weapon. That isnt all roses either since Scar is under threat by rivals who wish to replace him as leader as well as the ever looming presence of leopards. With Bernie, Louie, Mac, Russell Ferrier. His narration doesn't just explain what's happening - it inserts conversations and thoughts like "What an idiot" that are a bit over the top and unnecessary. MVP: Most Valuable Primate: Directed by Robert Vince. While Allen's joke-filled monologue will please some viewers, those who prefer less made-up animal "dialogue" and more straightforward, observational narration will find Allen a tad gimmicky. Where Chimpanzee falters is its narration. Whether it's a close-up of the chimps lazily grooming each other, an action sequence of them executing a Colobus monkey hunt, or just a sweeping pan of the entire forest landscape, the camera work is precise and evocative of a world that most of us will never see in person. Fothergill's team (as viewers learn in the end credits) endured all manner of inconveniences and injuries to capture these intimate shots of the chimpanzees and their surroundings. Nature documentaries are almost always visually dazzling, and Chimpanzee is no exception.
